The first ceiling fan appeared in the early 1860’s and at that time they were not powered by an electric motor but powered by a stream of running water in conjunction with a turbine to drive a system of belts which would turn the 2-blade fans. During the energy crisis of the 70’s, ceiling fans were ever increasing in popularity due to the economics of the time. By the year 2001, the old standby functional ceiling fan became very decorative and highly technical, newer companies brought well built fans with distinctive designs to the market.
Unlike air conditioners, fans only move the air, they do not change the temperature, therefore ceiling fans have an electrical switch on the side of the fan that changes the direction of the blade rotation. In the summer, the fan’s direction of rotation should be set so that the air is blown downward (counter clockwise). In the winter, the blades should be rotating in a clockwise direction, bringing the cold air up forcing the warm air down and set on a slow speed. Thus the thermostat can be set to a few degrees lower to save energy, while maintaining the same level of comfort.
